Strong Roots, New Heights
Founded in 1991 by Nancy Boone Allsbrook and Mary Goetze, the Mountain Lake Colloquium for Teachers of General Music Methods is a biennial forum that provides a platform for participants to discuss critical issues, research, and best practices related to teacher education in general music. Our goal is to create an open platform through which we can reflect on our practices and share with our peers in this scholarly community.
The 2027 Mountain Lake Colloquium theme, Strong Roots, New Heights, draws on the image of a tree that survives and grows because its roots run deep. In a time marked by global conflict, rapidly changing technologies, political shifts, and ongoing uncertainty, this theme emphasizes the importance of grounding ourselves in what we know, value, and have learned together. Strong roots help us withstand instability, discern which changes warrant response, and move forward with purpose to reach new heights. As Pakistani writer and consultant Tasneem Hameed said, “Learn character from trees, values from roots, and change from leaves.”*

Housing information
When you register for the colloquium, please make sure to also contact the Mountain Lake Lodge to reserve housing by calling (540)-626-7121 and referencing Music Colloquium 2027. The nightly rate per person is TBA and includes lodging, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and beverages throughout the conference. Additional persons in the room are priced at TBA per person. Please make housing reservations as soon as you are able.
Travel Information
There are two possible airports for traveling to Mountain Lake: Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA) & Tri-Cities Regional Airport (TRI). ROA is approximately 1 hour and 4 minutes from Mountain Lake. TRI is about 2.5 hours. Cost may vary depending on the airport. Carpooling to and from airports can be arranged by posting on our Facebook.
Accessibility & Accomodations
Our goal is to make the colloquium as accessible as possible. However, the lodge is historic and pre-dates ADA mandates. Thus, there are no elevators in the lodge. We have secured golf carts to transport individuals from the lodge entrance to their cabins and to the session spaces in the lodge's basement. Other accommodations include reserved seating in the dining hall (part of it is divided by a step), trays for carrying food during meals, and dietary restrictions (please indicate on the registration form).
